Trail running in the City

Since it's basically summer time, I've been keeping up with the Woods runs, which is necessary, because it seems to be the only day I actually go out and run right now.  Sometimes on my way home from work I think about going for a run when I get home.  Usually that changes after I get home and walk the dogs. By the time I'm done, I no longer feel like going for a run and so I don't.  Bad habit to get into, I know.  So at least I have the woods on Wednesday nights.
Last night I really didn't want to go at all, because I've gotten incredibly lazy since the last marathon.  No joke.  Before the marathon I was going to the gym, running, and coaching track, all while having a good time.  Now I'm not really into the gym or the running, and track is over for the season.  Some people call it taking a break, but I call it just being over it.  Or, LAZY.  It's fine though, this happened last year too.  I think it's a summer thing.  Most people hit the winter and don't want to workout or do anything, but it seems I'm the opposite.  As soon as summer hits, I'm not into doing anything that involves extra work.  I'll still do it, I just don't like it as much.
But anyways, so I didn't want to run last night.  It was supposed to rain and be stormy, so I was really hoping the weather would come through for me, but it didn't.  Then when the other teacher who runs the woods said she was still running, I knew I had to go.   It started off poorly because the solitary bathroom that is available was occupied and then suddenly "broken". Usually I use the bathroom before a race just as a security blanket, so it's not a huge deal, but still.  One toilet and you broke it. Thanks buddy.  So it never rained and we went out and did the 5.5 miles just like we were supposed to, myself included.  Funny story, the run turned out to be my best woods time yet.  And I didn't even use the Tailwind.  I guess I'm just a champion trail runner now.  I came in 38 overall with a total time of 45:21 and 7th out of the females.  Not too bad.
So, that's my story for now.  Trail running is going well, other running is basically non-existent at the moment.  Until next time, PICTURES!

Checked out this restaurant in Portland.  Worth it.  The milkshake was delicious.

And here's Portland. From the car.

Run to Remember 2016

Ok so I waited until the last possible moment to sign up for the half this year, but I still ended up doing it.  It is a real nice run, so I don't mind running it, even though I've never had great luck with the weather.  The first year I ran, it was in the high 40s at the start, last year it was warmer, but too warm with the sun by the middle.  This year was pretty spot on for weather, a bit breezy and a little humid, but not terrible.  It had to happen sometime I guess.  Anyways, I think the main reason this run is my favorite is because it was my first half ever and then later my first half coming in under 1:50.  Every time I run this race, good things happen, even if it is hard during the actual run.  But this year I ran it to run with Ryan.  Which worked great for a mile, but I really had to stop for a bathroom break because the lines were too long to get a final break in before we started running. So I stopped for the portapotty line between miles 1 - 2 and decided that it was too long so I kept running.  But I was also looking for Ryan, who I thought was still behind me at this point, so it was more of a run/walk.  Plus, turns out skipping that line was a poor choice and I spent the next mile and a half dying for a bathroom so when I found them at mile 3, you can bet I hopped into that line and stayed.  While I was waiting I texted Ryan, hoping that he wouldn't have gone too far past, or at all past yet.  Turns out he was well ahead, by at least 5 minutes. I'll be honest, I had a moment right then of not finishing.  The whole point was to run with Ryan and here I am almost a full mile behind him at this point. I figured there was little to no chance of me catching up to him.  But I kept running after I used the portapotty, I just picked up the speed a little bit.  I really wanted the chance to catch Ryan even if it was seemingly impossible.  So as I'm coming up the turn in the road off the bridge, heading into mile 5, I see Ryan coming back down the other side of the road, after the U-turn, going down under the bridge, heading into Cambridge toward MIT.  At that point I was thinking to myself that there was just no way I would catch him.  After all, he was at least a mile ahead.  But I kept running.  I made it up and around the U-turn and headed back down into Cambridge as well, still trying to catch Ryan.  In mile 6 I stopped thinking about it for a few seconds and had fun running down what I like to call high-five mile.  Different cops from different cities line the side of the street and stand there clapping and handing out high-fives.  It's definitely one of the best parts of the run.  During that mile my knee also really started to hurt and again I didn't think I'd be able to make it another 6.5 miles back to the finish.  I thought about cutting through the median, taking off my bib, and waiting for Ryan to come back around.  Then I got a text from Ryan saying he was at mile 7.  Which was convenient because I looked at my watch and there I was at 6.96.  So I looked up and saw his head bobbing around in the distance.  That was enough for me to run fast enough to catch back up to him instead of dropping out of the race.  Once I caught him again, we ran/walked the last few miles to the finish.  It's funny though because it definitely didn't feel like it was another 6 miles when we were together again.  Even though my knee really hurt and even though it probably took another hour, it didn't seem like it at all.  And in the end I still had fun and we finished together.  My one complaint is that the medical aid stations didn't have any Advil or Tylenol.  I forgot to bring some and I really could have used it for the knee problem.  But, we had fun and that's all that matters in the end.  I really recommend this race for anyone in the area, it's a great run, and there's a 5 mile option if you're not into running a half.  Remember that for next year, because I'm sure we'll be out there again!
And now, the pictures, which btw, the race offered for free this year, which is also a big selling point.

Twinning

Bonus Woods run photo.  Last night was the Tour #1, which goes off the regular path and onto smaller side hiking trails.  It was supposed to be 5.6, but most of us got lost and ended up doing 5.2 instead.  Still a nice night for a run though.  I love woods running, even if it is significantly harder than road running.

What's your pace?

Today was opening day of the Lynn Woods Running 2016 summer season.  Of course I went, because you can't miss opening day! This year I decided to stick with the long runs, so our first race was 5.1, half on the regular trail and half on the side trails.  It was great until about 2.5, then it got real bad, then it got great again.  It was very warm for a woods run and yet, it's not the warmest it's going to be this summer, so I guess it's time to get used to that again.  You know it's hot when you go through 24 oz of water on a 5 mile run though.  That hasn't happened in ages. I made it through in 46ish minutes.  Not bad for a woods run.  Full disclosure, I walked the Goat Path today.  There was no way I was making it up that.  And another hill that was roughly the size of Mt. Everest.  Still a good opening run.  It helps that I was doing 3 - 5 miles in the woods at least once a week during track season.  I don't have any official results, but I'm willing to bet that I came in top 50 in the long run.  The 31st finisher was in at a 39 something pace, and I know there weren't that many more people in front of me.
Anyways, the point of this isn't the actual woods run, but the pace at which it was taken.  I'm not sure if this is supposed to be how it works, but my 80 degree woods run pace for the first three miles was the same as my regular day road running pace of roughly 8:30.  Is that normal?  Isn't a trail pace supposed to be slower due to hills and terrain? Or are they supposed to be around the same general time?  Basically what I'm wondering is, should I be running faster on the road than I am on the trails? If so, I need to give myself a real push I guess.
Well, that's about it for now.  No woods run pictures yet, but I have a ton of other randoms that you can enjoy.  Non-running related, but still lovely to look at, I assume.

Wednesday night runs

As you might be aware, I've been running the Lynn Woods runs this Spring/Summer.  This year we haven't been as good at keeping up with the runs.  Last year though, we had the MCM at the end of October, so it was more necessary to participate in the long runs and actually make an effort to push through them.  This year, my training is far from needing long runs in the woods, not to mention that some people were carrying babies and couldn't run towards the end.  So, it's been a bit sporadic this year, but we've still been going and at least walking the route, so that's something.  Now, you should also know by now that I've been testing out Tailwind and making decisions based on it's powers.  Sure, I had already decided that it was worth it, but tonight really drove that point home.
Today I went for a nice 5K before boxing, because I wasn't sure if I was going to run the woods or not, and I definitely wanted to get some miles in.  I went out on my now regular route behind the boxing club and down the rail trail.  When  I set out, I wasn't planning on going hard or fast, but I guess Tailwind had different ideas.  My first mile was done in 7:59.  The last two miles were both done in 8:11.  (Yea consistency!) Overall, my 5K was done in 25:13, which, according to Garmin is a new PR for me.  Woo Woo! That came on a Wednesday, after working all day, just drinking Tailwind, with no intention of trying. Needless to say, I was pleased with myself and of course bragged all about it to the trainers at Title when I got back.  Sure, they definitely didn't care, but whatever, it was my moment.  So I did my power hour 8 rounds of boxing, ate a PB&J while driving to the woods, and decided to run the short run after all.  Again, still mostly under the influence of Tailwind.  No one else from the group was running tonight, but that's ok, I've done plenty of solo runs before.  When the short run was lined up, I jumped in and hit the trails.  Lynn Woods has some lovely hills and the run is famous for starting on the incline, so everyone slows down at first.  As I was running in, I was passing people left and right and was feeling pretty good about it, even though I figured it wouldn't last.  But, the longer we ran, the more people I passed, until I was all alone.  Up in the distance I could see a figure in a purple shirt, but I just couldn't quite catch him.  Then again, I wasn't trying that hard either.  I was convinced that I was in first place for a while, but when I caught sight of that shirt, I realized I wasn't.  However, I knew I must be close, because I had passed so many people and there was no one around me.  To the point where I couldn't even hear feet coming up behind me, so I don't even think there was anyone close to me.  Never look back, that's the first rule of running a race, so I kept my eyes forward and chased that purple shirt.  Sure, I never did catch him, but I did manage to pull out a 9:00 minute mile in the woods.  Maybe that's not that impressive, but it was enough to keep me in FIRST PLACE for female finishers.  That's right, after two years of woods runs, I finally came in first. Top five actually, even if I was number five.  Anyways, I'm proud of myself but I'm fairly certain I owe most of it to the Tailwind.  If I didn't believe it worked before, I definitely do now.

PROOF!

Oh and here's a lovely picture I drew, just because I like the way it came out. Well, most of it. I don't love Anna's eyes. I do love how Elsa came out though. I so should have been a Disney animator.  Also, a sign for Matt D's surprise party this past Saturday. In case you're wondering, I take requests.

It's not how you start the race, it's how you finish it

As the end of the year approaches, now is a good time to reflect on my year in running.  Last December, around this date, I decided to embark on a new journey.  Unlike many others, I didn't have a real reason for this journey.  There was no major life change that I was trying to get through and I was already mostly in shape thanks to walking the dogs.  Yet I felt like it was necessary to do something new.  So I ran.  My goal was to be able to run the 2014 WDW marathon.  If we're going off goals alone, then technically, no, I did not meet my specific and set goal.  I will not be running the Disney marathon in a few weeks.  However, since I started running for real last December, I have made it from just a few 5Ks up to a 5K or more every month and completed two full marathons.  Along with those full marathons, I have completed four half-marathons and countless other distances as part of my training runs. So I think it's safe to say that even though I didn't make it to Disney, my running goal for the year has been accomplished.
Looking back, I'm still amazed that I went from 5ks to marathons in less than a year.  When I started running I flat out told Cynthia that there was no way I was ever going to run a marathon.  "That's crazy!" were my exact words.  I felt like I could barely make 4 miles, how could I ever make 26.2.  But then I signed up for a 15K.  At that time, 9 miles seemed crazy, unthinkable, out of reach.  But I did it.  After that, I though, who needs to go any further, 9 miles is more than enough, I would never want to run for more than 2 hours, no way am I running longer.  (For proof, see my previous posts, you can easily follow my progression from NO WAY, to LET'S DO THIS!)  Then some how, Cynthia convinced me to sign up for the Run to Remember half-marathon in May 2013.  I'm really not sure how that happened, but it did.  Of course I decided that a half was fine, but there was no way I was going any farther with that.  I did my training and got my miles in, and I was content with a half.  Until April.  Maybe it was the events of marathon Monday that changed my mind, or maybe my mind was changed already and I just don't remember.  Either way, after that, I started to think, if I can run a half, maybe a full isn't so crazy.  Then we ran the half, and ran it so close to under 2 hours, that I really thought, a full is something I could do someday.  I still wasn't planning on doing one this year though.
Then over the summer, Cynthia procured a transfer bib for the Marine Corps Marathon in October.  Even though I wasn't sure I wanted to run a full, I was in it now.  As we all know, I ran it and mostly enjoyed it.  So much so that three weeks later we were all signed up for Philly and lined up at the start line, once again, at 5 a.m.  Then there was another half just a few weeks ago in Gloucester.  That's the last race I've run recently, but I like to leave on a high note.  I crushed my previous recorded time of 2:01, with a new time of 1:58.
Sure, there will be more halves and fulls in the new year, and even some 5ks and 10ks. Of course I will continue with the boxing club and I have plans to stick with the Lynn Woods Running Club in the summer time as well.  I'm even throwing caution into the wind and applying to be a girls track coach at a local high school.  I have no idea where 2014 will take me but I know that if I can do all of this is one year, I can do so much more next year.

Some pictures from the Gloucester half, because I'm not sure I ever shared any.

My name is Allison and I'm a marathon addict

I'm going to credit this to the runner's high phenomenon.  Even though I KNOW I struggled in the last 6 miles of the last marathon, now that it's been a  few days, I want to run another one.  Right now you might be asking yourself, WTF is wrong with this girl?  If you are, just know I'm asking myself the same question.  There's no reason for me to run another marathon.  Now, I just want to.  Is that weird? Maybe.  Sadly, as the winter rolls in, marathon options around here are supremely limited.   Most of the big marathons are being held on the West Coast or the Southern states, where it's probably a good 30 degrees warmer than the East Coast in the winter.  Since Ryan basically ruled out all travel for the purpose of running a marathon, I'm kind of limited here.  Not that I can argue his point.  We have a wedding to pay for and spending money to run 26.2 really isn't the best idea.  I suppose if I could find a marathon in, say, Saugus, he'd probably tell me to go for it.  Unfortunately, the closest marathon I've found that's coming up, is in Delaware.  Aside from the fact that I don't really even LIKE the state of Delaware, it would require another road trip, and neither of us is up for that.  In regards to why I don't like Delaware, I really don't have a good reason, or any reason at all.  We just paid a lot of tolls traveling through, so that made me sort of hate the state.  Oh well.
Louisiana has a marathon in January, which COULD be do-able, since Ryan has family there, so at least we'd have a reason to travel, but I'm pretty sure that's still out of the question.  Airfare is expensive, especially for a weekend trip.  You know what's really funny about this whole thing?  My original goal was to run one marathon, and one marathon only.  Walt Disney World 2014.  You know what marathon I'm not running? WDW 2014.  Though, 2015 is certainly an option in my mind at this point.  I'd also like to run Boston, but I can't fathom asking people to give me $4000 just to run, and I'm not in any shape to BQ anytime soon.  Plus, that's sold out too.
You know what I really want though?  Another running club.  The Lynn Woods Running Club was great for the summer months.  I really enjoyed having a group of people to run with every week.  Since those runs are over though, and most of my friends don't run long distance, I'm left with two, occasionally three, running buddies.  That's great and all, but if the others can't run with me, I end up either not going, or turning around earlier than I plan.  Running long distances alone is harder than you may think.  I know I can convince myself to run to a certain point, but eventually I end up turning around, even if I didn't make the distance I intended.  With a running group, I feel like I would have more success in running longer distances more often.  Knowing that I had to meet others would get me moving on days I didn't want too, and having people keep pace would keep me moving even when I started to feel done.  Ideally, Title would start a running club on the side.  I'd run with the people I box with, and I think it would be good for their business.  Or at least for their trainers, who could add in some extra workouts on the side.  But what do I know? I'm not the head of that business, and really, what I think and what is true are not always the same.  Either way though, all I know is that I could really use a winter running club, preferably one that meets more than once a week.

Wicked awesome half

Today I ran the Wicked half-marathon through Salem and Marblehead.  It was a great day for a run, not too sunny, not too hot, even though the weather said 95% humidity.  Didn't feel like it though.  Plus, we ran down by the beach in Marblehead and got a great sea breeze.  The goal for today was to break a 2 hour half.  If you recall, the time of my last official half, the run to remember, was 2:01.  Just one minute OVER my goal.  Ugh, I know, lame right?  So, today I was really hoping for that 2:00 or under.  Now, we've been running this Marblehead route as part of our training runs, and there are a lot of rolling hills.  The scenery is nice but it doesn't offer enough distraction from the uphill battles.  So our first three miles started off great, under 9 minutes, and we even picked up Holly at mile 4.  She ran for a few with us, which was lovely.   But these hills are killer.  As it figured, we had to stay at a 9:10 or lower pace in order to come in under 2 hours.  Unfortunately on the hills, we hit a 9:22 for one mile.  Later, I hit a 9:11 and another over 9:10 pace, but I'm not sure exactly what it was.  Overall though, we managed to keep the pace right where it needed to be.  By mile 7 I wasn't really feeling it anymore.  Then I grabbed a double latte gu from one of the race volunteers.  At first I kind of thought it was gross, but halfway through sucking it down, I changed my mind.  It's actually an ok taste, sort of like super melted coffee ice cream, except a bit thicker.  Whatever the taste though, it definitely helped.  I got through those last 6.1 miles no problem.  Well, ok, maybe not NO problem, but I was able to make it.  According to the timing chip, when I crossed the finish line, my final time was 1:58:49.  YES! Almost 2 minutes under two hours, and 3 minutes off my previous best half.  Talk about a PR.  Needless to say, I'm feeling pretty great today.  Of course, I'm sure the boxing classes have something to do with my overall endurance, as well as the summer runs in Lynn Woods, but I'm pretty sure it's the longer runs that are making the 13 easier.  Suddenly 13.1 seems so do-able, when you know in just 5 weeks, you have to add on another whole 13.1 to that.  Here's a map of my run, just for fun and a picture too.  I'll try to get some more up later.  Keep an eye out for the porta-potty shot!

Oh btw, my Garmin was about .10 off from the race time/miles, which is why it says 1:59 at 13.1.  I'm going with the race time on this one though!

The end is nigh

Apparently next Wednesday is the last Lynn Woods Run of the season.  What AM I going to do with my Wednesday nights now?  Extra boxing? A new running club? The possibilities are endless.  It's a little sad though, I'll miss the weekly woods runs and all the people around.  Being part of a group is a nice feeling, even if you never talk to anyone outside of your little circle.
Marathon training is still going strong.  There's a half on Saturday in Salem that I am most likely running.  Someone from the woods club had a number that they can't use anymore, so if that works out, I'll be running bright and early Saturday.  At least this time, I can aim for a PR and actually have a goal in mind that I know is do-able.  If you remember my last sanctioned half, I was pretty nervous, and mostly unsure that I could ever finish it in under 2 hours.  I'm still not sure if I can finish in under 2 hours, but I like my chances, as long as the weather stays cool and I take tomorrow as a rest day.
My week has been super busy with workouts, so I'm pretty excited for a rest day.  I've been running or boxing since Sunday, which is not that fun, if you can believe it.  Not much else to update about right now, everything is still chugging along nicely. Oh wait, I know, one more thing.  Tonight I tried spaghetti squash for the first time and I was pleasantly surprised.  What I was expecting was a gross mash of squash that tasted like regular old winter squash, but what it was, was so much more.  At first, it was a bit of struggle to get over the crunchy-ness of the spaghetti threads, but after that, I actually enjoyed it.  I'd eat it again if I had to.

Back at it

Another long run is in the books.  A real long run too, none of this 10 mile weenie crap.  Sorry, that was uncalled for, and after this marathon, 10 miles will go back to being a long run, so don't be offended.  I will regret that statement in due time, I'm sure of it.  Tonight we did 14, following a familiar route.  We started at Tides in Nahant, ran down the beach, through Swampscott, into Marblehead, and then turned around and looped back through Swampscott to Tides again.  Since we went at 5 pm we got to enjoy an awesome sunset over the ocean and a lot of cool air.  Fall running really must be the best.  The air is perfect, the weather is fantastic, and soon enough, there will be awesome Halloween decorations out everywhere.  Salem might be a bit too crowded for running, but it would be some great scenery.
Here's the route we ran tonight.  We had a great time without all the humidity, it was the 3rd fastest half marathon I've ever run.  The fastest still stands as the Run to Remember at 2:01.  All of my running buddies have big races next weekend, so I'm on my own for that I guess.  Two of them are running a half in Salem and the other two are doing the Spartan beast, which is just crazy.

I don't have many runs planned before the marathon actually.  Just the Electric Run at Gillette Stadium the first weekend in October and the last few Lynn Woods Runs.  There is a 15K or 5K for the running club, but I don't really want to risk that so close to the marathon.  It's 2 weeks before, and with my luck, I'd break something running through the woods.  Plus, from the sound of it, the 15K is a bunch of loops through the woods, which sounds awful because that's a lot of hills.  Most likely, I'll stick to long run Sundays and boxing for endurance.  Then, after the marathon, I can go back to running for fun, which I am really looking forward too.

Oh, one more thing, I made it through Once Upon a Time season 2 (in record time) and I'm pumped for season 3.  And yes, I know the town was frozen for 28 years, but I still don't buy the Snow White, Prince Charming, Emma Swan family thing.  It just doesn't fit with me.  However, I do love Mr. Gold.  My worry is that they're going to turn Peter Pan into something awful and he's one of my FAVORITE story characters, so I really hope they don't.  Lastly, I feel like they could have held off on a spin-off for a few, but whatever.

Rad Marathon Training

I've been so busy being RAD and doing summer activities that I've been slacking on the blog again.  When I say being RAD, I'm not being full of myself, I'm merely referencing the Color Me Rad run I did this past weekend.  Last year I did the Color Run, which was basically the same race.  The only difference, besides location, was the efficiency of the race.  Last year, the parking for the race was far enough away that people needed to be bused to and from the parking lot.  Unfortunately, there was a major accident on 495 that day, which ended up holding up traffic for hours.  A lot of people spent more time waiting for the bus than they did running the race, myself included.  So while the race was fun, I wasn't really interested in going back to that particular course again.  Color Me Rad was in Brockton and there were no parking or traffic issues.  We got in, we ran, had some fun, and left.  Since we ran as a team, and every team needs a theme, we decided to run as Jem and the Holograms.  I must say, we looked fantastic.  People were hating all over the place.  We started off nice and clean but by the end, we were hardly recognizable.  It was a good time though and I'd definitely do it again next year.
Marathon training is coming along.  I don't really know if it's going great, or terribly.  We did 13.1 last night, just over 2 hours, but I wasn't too happy by the end.  My entire lower body was sore.  I honestly had a moment of panic in wondering how I can possibly run another 13.1 after that, when I felt like I couldn't possibly take another step at the end.  Today, in an effort to get used to running on tired legs, I went out for a 6 mile run.  But I went at 1 pm, which was possibly the worst choice, as the weather was hot and humid, and the sun was out.  Nevertheless, I made it 5 before I decided it was best if I walked the final mile.  The 5 took me about 44 minutes.  Not bad I suppose. Next weekend our long run ups to 15, so I need to mentally prepare for that.  I think I also need to figure out a fuel for the middle of the run. The sports beans are good, but I feel like they're not cutting it for what I need.  Burning sugar and carbs isn't going to be enough.  I need to be able to sustain the muscle power for the other half. So any suggestions on that would be helpful.
The Wednesday night runs are still going strong.  We've taken to having a little party in the parking lot afterwards, usually margs and chips. Don't knock it til you try it, it's fun, cheap, and a nice way to see everyone for a little bit.  Ryan also bought me a Garmin Forerunner 10 GPS watch.  I'm pretty pumped about it, because I was getting sick of using my phone for everything.  I knew I'd need something for the marathon anyways, because I didn't want to use my phone and drain the battery.  I'd prefer to have the battery at least halfway charged, in case of emergency.  I love the watch and it's been great, but I did notice that I've already started a new habit that I need to break.  When I know I'm getting close to the last mile, I can't help but keep looking at the watch every few seconds and watching the time tick away.  That's going to make everything seem so much harder, so I really need to stop.  If you want to view my new routes, you can check me out on Garmin connect, awwie15.  Now you're all caught up, so here are some pics.  Enjoy.
